The June edition of Vanity Fair is looking at how post combat soldiers with PTSD fare after repatriation. The article suggests that trauma responses can be exacerbated by our individualistic society. Within the combat situation soldiers have very much worked as a team for individual and group survival. This cohesion is both supportive and in line with the true nature of being human. On return to society, these individuals are robbed of this team or collective experience and this is traumatising in itself. It is suggested that we take lessens from more ancient cultures and their traditions as well as having homecoming ceremonies.

The article also examines how humans are generally more content and less prone to depression and anxiety when we work in teams for common good. The article explores how individuals have expressed the positives of wars or severe challenges for developing a common need and thus goals.
